Night Feast
of Minister Han’s Son

My work “Night Feast of Minister Han’s Son” represents a night party of 52 international students that live lavishly in the US. The scroll painting includes five distinct parts: Board Game in the Apartment, Night Club, EDM, Waiting at a Boba Shop, Night Feast.

The postscript is conducted from a series of interviews that references the traditional format of Tiba (often reviews written and stamped by the collectors). The subject of the interview touches on “carpe diem”, financial independency, luxury commodities, and peer pressure... I intend to create a counter-narrative for the underrepresented youth.
Postscript
presenting ephemera of contemporary China reflecting a historical moment. Bringing a discussion of post-colonial culture, consumerism capitalism, multi-cultural identity and contemporary interpretation of carpe diem.
Inspiration
This work references from a Tang dynasty painting “ The Night Reveal of Han Xizai” in which it represents a night party hosted by minister Han who anticipated the fall of the corrupt court and lived dissolutely in respond to the decline of Tang dynasty.
Behind the scene
In this work, all characters are completely fabricated, with direct sources from Instagram and other social media; I digitally collaged them on Photoshop.
